René Prou Accent Chair 1930s
A French Art Deco side chair in ebonised wood by René Prou, the model documented in Atelier René Prou's advertisement in Mobilier & Décoration, October 1930. The rounded back, clean tapering legs and compact form are characteristic of Prou's refined approach to seating, achieving lightness and comfort without ornament. Newly upholstered in Dedar Milano Vladimiro, a kid mohair velvet, in deep charcoal.
Prou trained at the École Bernard-Palissy in Paris and began his career at the interior design firms Gouffé and Schmit & Cie. He designed interiors for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes and went on to work across ocean liners, train carriages and major institutional commissions. His pupils at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs included Charlotte Perriand and the postwar modernists Pierre Guariche and Alain Richard. His work is held in museum collections including the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
