A six-panel byōbu (folding screen) from the Meiji period, circa 1900, finished with oxidised silver leaf (ginpaku). The silver leaf has naturally developed a soft patina over time, giving the surface a subtle and refined aged character. Framed in a black lacquered wooden frame. In Japan, byōbu screens are traditionally used as backdrops for ikebana flower arrangements or to accompany other decorative or ceremonial objects.
