A stunning antique Japanese Folding Screen  (c.1890- 1910 / Late Edo - early Meji period) featuring a chrysanthemum flower garden blooming against clouds of oxidised silver leaf clouds.  The design has been created with painted flowers in relief using a shell paste (gofun) and with a silver leaf background that has oxidised over time creating a wonderful darkened patina.

Traditionally used in tea ceremonies, a Byôbu folding screen is great showcase of Japanese craft and a wonderful heirloom piece for the wall.

Japan, (c.1890), Lacquered wood, Paper, Silver leaf, Silk.

Some lacquer loss and dents in the frame,  some visible restorations, a small tear in silk brocade on the back, stains on the brocade silk frame.  Wonderful antique condition.
