Sophisticated craft-manship is how Pascale Zintzen founder of Oikos Studio describes her work and artistic process. A multidisciplinary artist based in-between the countryside and Barcelona, Spain where she lives with her two children and a dog. Pascale is inspired by the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, a child-like curiosity and the atmospheric landscape surrounding her home. Her work is rooted in her background as an archaeologist specialising in domestic ceramics. She believes ancestral home objects contain a certain spiritual magic in their beauty and represent the ‘oikos’ of the human being (oikos meaning ‘home’ in ancient Greek). Pascale's ceramic body of work is situated at the intersection of functional art, sculpture and history and her practice is characterised by slow manufacturing patiently respecting the time and process required to create each artwork.
Pascale Zintzen describes her process:
“I collect wild pigments from the landscape surrounding our country house and where I have my studio. One of the things I discovered was the variation of colours of the earth that could be found in different places near our home especially in the olive tree fields and near the beaches. I collect the earth and mix with a bit of water. They contain earth pigments but more than anything, they contain memories of the moments they were collected; during a walk, after a swim in the sea, walking with the kids discovering new places or walking the dog on my own. I brush my clay artwork with the pigment before it goes into the kiln. I learn by doing and I create by experimenting. I profoundly believe in the "WORK" as the artistic process, in an artisanal way; repeating, finding precision. The process should be demanding but also humble in the sense that I use what I find around me” Pascale Zintzen, 2024.
