The 'Noce' floor lamp was designed by Castiglioni and manufactured by Flos during the 1970s owing its name to it's rounded shape that resembles a half walnut. Constructed in die-cast aluminium with a thick pressed transparent glass diffuser, the internal bulbs are fixed on a moveable axis that can be adjusted with an external switch to change the direction of the light.

Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) completed his studies at Politecnico di Milano in 1944 and immediately started a design practice with his brothers, Livio (1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968).  Together they designed objects for an array of brands, such as Kartell, Zanotta, Flos, Bernini, Siemens, Knoll, Poggi, Lancia, Alessi, Ideal Standard and Arflex. The Castiglioni brothers became renowned for their lighting design, most famously the Arco lamp that is still in production today.  An all round designer, Achille was involved in many projects including urban planning, architecture, exhibitions and product design.  He is the only Italian architect and designer to whome the MoMa in New York has dedicated a retrospective.
