Untitled Green Carl Magnus

In the spring of 2023 Pol Matthé stumbled upon the work of the Swedish artist Carl Magnus (1943- ) when he discovered a dedication to the artist with a sculpture he had acquired by the American artist, Richard Nonas (1936-2021). Nonas had been working with Anders Tornberg Gallery in Lund, where Carl Magnus lives, for many years and has realised several sculptural installations throughout Sweden.  In the winter of 2023, while working on another project in Malmö, Pol Matthé decided to visit Carl Magnus at his home in Lund. Every room of his apartment was filled with books, artworks of friends, his own prototypes, and wonderful pieces of furniture. Over coffee and croissants they talked about situationism, his trips to Italy, public commissions and responsibilities. A memorable encounter. A selection of 6 coloured lithographs from the 1980s, have been chosen from Pol Matthé's collection of Carl Magnus' work and are presented at the 'Everyday Ephemera' exhibition.

Carl Magnus (born 1943) was a member of the Bauhaus Situationist, located at Drakabygget in Örkelljunga together with Jörgen Nash. In the 1970s his colour palette became more muted and he developed an interest in spatial displacement. Since then, Magnus' art has been based on a dialogue between architecture and art, exploring the simple geometric forms of architectural details on facades of buildings and monuments and using them as the basis for his graphics, paintings and sculptures. The staircase, a prominent motif in his work.

Magnus' work is represented in the collection of Moderna Museet in Stockholm and  Nationalmuseet in Stockholm. In 1981 he was a guest professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. He was head teacher of sculpture at the Valand School of Art in Gothenburg in 1985 and a professor of painting at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm between 1991-1996. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Stockholm since 1992. Carl Magnus has been living in Lund since 1979. His apartment, opposite Skissernas Museum and his studio on Kiliansgatan, are his safe haven in the breaks between his travels around the world.
