The work depicts a contemplative portrait rendered in rich flesh tones contrasted with a richly textured dark background showing a skilled handling of light and shadow.

Though not widely recognised today, Breakespeare was a prominent member of the Birmingham Art Circle and his distinctive work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London (1883-1893). He trained at the Birmingham Government School of Design, Charles Verlat's Academy in Antwerp and in Paris.
