A hand-carved hardwood small side table with a circular top and lower shelf, both surfaces carved with peonies and overlapping foliage. The cabriole legs continue the carved decoration down to pad feet. A dark ebonised finish with golden tones.
These tables were hand-carved in Japan and commissioned by Liberty & Co for their Eastern Bazaar at Regent Street, London, as part of their exotic furniture range during a period of widespread enthusiasm for Japanese decorative arts. They were made in numbered sections for flat-packing and assembly on arrival. The type is documented in Daryl Bennett's Liberty's Furniture 1875–1915, p. 29.
